Facebook isn’t only the most popular social media channel in the world; it’s also a tool recruiters can use to get to know candidates. And while over 18 million users have found a job thanks to the site, many companies are learning more about candidates through their Facebook posts than either candidates or recruiters want.

Over half of the companies that screen candidates online check their Facebook profiles, and many more plan to start. Recruiters use the site to research a candidate’s potential fit into the company’s culture, their ability to communicate well, and other factors, and often recommend candidates based on their profiles. However, a number of candidates are cut from the interview process based on their posts; even poor communication skills, as evidenced by status posts and comments, can cost a candidate a job.

Sometimes recruiters learn too much from a candidate’s profile, and this has caused concern in the industry. Legally protected information can be seen by accident, and this drives the need for companies to have social media screening policies in order to stay compliant.
