It’s always interesting to note the actual expanse of Facebook’s reach, and the on-platform conversation volume around major events.

The 2017 UEFA Champions League final was held last weekend, and as noted by Facebook “Football is the most popular sport” on the platform. As such, their latest stats on the surrounding discussion from the match may provide the best perspective on just how big sports conversation can be on The Social Network, which is key for sports-related brands to know as they go about planning their marketing strategy.

Consider this:

Across the globe on Facebook, 34 million people had 98 million interactions related to the Champions League Final, and on Instagram, 14 million people had 50 million interactions related to the match.”

That's a huge audience to tap into – and it wasn’t just the match itself. Facebook says that more than 4 million fans also tuned in to Facebook Live coverage of the two teams’ training sessions ahead of the event, while another 1.4 million tuned into Live again to hear star Cristiano Ronaldo speak after Real Madrid’s win.

As noted, for those brands working in sports-related markets, these levels of engagement are hard to ignore. Facebook has combined some more key stats into this new infographic.
